2009 Media Education Consortium Conference

Intercultural Communication, Media Ethics, and Professionalism

Wuhan University | December 8-10, 2009

The formal launch of the Media Education Consortium took place on the occasion of a conference organized with Wuhan University’s School of Journalism and Communication. This conference, The Fifth International Conference on Intercultural Communication, Media Ethics, and Professionalism, was held in Wuhan on December 8-10, 2009.

The Conference examined critical issues of media ethics in China. Panels addressed topics such as, “The Relevance of Media Education:  Chinese & US Case Studies”, “Blogging, New Technology, and New Ethics:  Implications for Journalism Education”, “How to Report on “Others”: Ethics and Problems in Intercultural Communications”, and “The Clash of Cultures and Their Reconciliation in News Reporting.”

Some of the noteworthy speakers at the USCET launch included Pulitzer Prize Winners Professor Chris Hanson of The Philip Merrill College of Journalism of the University of Maryland and Mr. Gregg Fields, Resident Fellow at the Global Business Journalism Programme at Tsinghua University; Professor Tong Bing of Fudan University’s School of Journalism and Communication; Professor Li Xiguang of Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communciation; Professor Huang Yu of Hong Kong Baptist University’s Department of Journalism; Mr. James McGregor, former chief executive of Dow Jones & Co. in China and noted author of “One Billion Customers”; and Ambassador Nicholas Platt, President Emeritus of the Asia Society.

USCET expresses its gratitude to Dean Luo Yicheng and Vice Dean Shan Bo of Wuhan University’s School of Journalism and Communication for their co-sponsorship of this event and their warm welcome to MEC members in Wuhan.

2009年媒介教育联合会会议

“跨文化交流,媒体伦理和专业精神”

武汉大学

媒介教育联合会的正式启动是在与武汉大学新闻与传播学院组织的一次会议上进行的。2009年12月8日至10日,第五届跨文化传播、媒体伦理、专业精神国际会议在武汉召开。

这次会议考察了中国媒体伦理的关键问题。专题小组讨论的主题包括: “媒体教育的相关性: 中美案例研究”、“博客、新技术、新伦理: 新闻教育的启示”、“如何报道“他人”: 跨文化交流中的伦理与问题”、“文化冲突与新闻报道中的和解”。

在USCET启动仪式上,一些值得注意的演讲者包括普利策奖得主,马里兰大学Philip Merrill新闻学院的Chris Hanson教授和清华大学全球商业新闻项目常驻研究Gregg Fields先生;复旦大学新闻与传播学院Tong Bing教授;清华大学新闻与社区学院Li Xiguang教授;香港浸会大学新闻系Huang Yu教授;曾任道琼斯公司(Dow Jones & Co.)中国区首席执行官、《One Billion Customers》一书作者的James McGregor先生以及亚洲协会名誉主席Nicholas Platt大使。
