HAN Juan

Career Goal: Journalist
Growing up in Xiangtai in Hebei Province, Han Juan belongs to a single-parent family where her father suffers from a mental disease and her grandparents are not able to work. Her family is solely dependent on the land they farm as a source of income and struggle to pay for the necessary medical treatments for her father.
“I am ready to become involved in the college life with courage and prospect, since I have been fascinated with mass media, and have a strong faith in the development of Chinese mass media.”

LI Yurong
Major: History
Career Goal: Professor
Li Yurong comes from Enshi, Hubei. Her mother suffers from an illness and is unable to work; therefore her family relies on her father’s income in order to pay family expenses such as tuition. Eventually Li Yurong plans to also study economics, have her own company, and help others.
“Although I have great pressure from finance, I do have confidence in my future, and I will take advantage of every chance with all my might, especially in the university, where I am sure that I will find my own way to realize my ideal.”

LU Xiaocui
Major: Law
Career Goal: Lawyer
Lu Xiaocui is from Wuding County in Yunnan Province. Her father died a few years ago and since then her mother has struggled with the sorrow and responsibility of supporting her as well as her brother. She believes that concentrating on her education will help lift the burden that her mother bears.
“I should cherish this opportunity and study harder to thank my family and the help from all the good people. I believe I will try my best to contribute to society.”

MA Xiaoshan
Major: International Economics and Trade
Career Goal: Business owner
Ma Xiaoshan is of Hui nationality and comes from Weishan County in Yunnan Province. There are four members in her family, all of which must be supported by only 1 mu of land. After suffering from a drought this year her family struggles to pay her tuition as well as her sister’s.
“I will grasp every opportunity to develop my own business and find my own company which will be a private enterprise. When the business develops well, I will try my best to contribute to the construction of society.”

SUN Tiecheng
Major: Accounting
Career Goal: Accountant
Within the Dali District in Yunnan Province, Sun Tiecheng, his family, and neighbors are faced with poor weather along with infertile soil and an inefficient transportation system. Due to his mother’s illness and poor returns in agriculture within his hometown, his family greatly struggles to pay his tuition.
“In four years of college, I believe I can learn economics very well with all my might, work in a company to challenge myself someday, and try my best to do for those in need.”

WANG Zheru
Major: Electronic Commerce
Career Goal: Civil servant
Coming from a poverty-stricken family in Dongkou County,Hunan, Wang Zheru and her family survive on 1,000 RMB each month. Her father and grandfather have passed away, and her mother must provide for her as well as her sick grandmother. Her mother is unable to afford school tuition as they have barely enough to get by.
“I hope that I can work in foreign enterprise or be a civil servant in the future.”

WU Hongyun
Major: English
Career Goal: Teacher/ Translator
Wu Hongyun is from the Honghe area in Yunnan Province where she also felt the effects of the severe drought this year. Her town experienced a shortage in rice and a rise in prices. Due to financial stress both her parents health was affected, which gave Wu Hongyun incentive to try harder and go after her dreams.
“I have wanted to be a teacher since I was very young. After I become a teacher, I can help poor children go to school and be able to leave their villages someday.”

XU Youlin
Major: Public Management
Career Goal: Promote economic development in Western China
Xu Youlin lives in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, but due to his parent’s poverty, he along with his brother have both been suspended from school numerous times. However, this has not dampened his dreams to graduate from a university and to better other Chinese citizens.
“We believe that it is our parents who wager their lives: our father worked as a keeper in our village, no matter how much he was paid and our mother sought for jobs here and there in order to save a meal, even if only one meal.”

ZHANG Jianshi
Major: Drug Smuggling Investigation
Career Goal: Researcher at the Bureau on Drugs
Zhang Jianshi’s parents are farmers in Wuding County, Yunnan Province. Her family has been confronted with many traumas, and are in debt due to medical bills. After her brother was brutally beaten and her mother became ill, Zhang Jianshi’s family could no longer support her tuition.
“I am confident that I will conquer all difficulties. I believe that hard work will make up for shortcomings.”

ZHANG Ziyang
Major: Japanese
Career Goal: Reporter
Zhang Ziyang is from Dangshan County in Anhui Province. His family is composed of his father, mother, and grandfather. Despite his poverty, Zhang Ziyang hopes to master different languages, specifically English and Japanese, as well as attend post-graduate school.
“I want to fulfill my study, have a chance at further education, and to contribute to society and achieve my dream.”
