The First Symposium on Global Journalism Education Reform

USCET collaborated with Tsinghua University to host the First Conference on Global Journalism Education Reform on December 19-21, 2008.

This conference was noteworthy in two regards. First, the agenda addressed a wide range of issues and brought together deans of many of China’s top journalism schools. Issues treated prominently at the conference included a Model Curriculum for Journalism Education drafted by UNESCO and presented by Tsinghua; the role of technology in journalism education and its use in practice; and the value of interdisciplinary studies for journalism students.

Selected conference presentations included:

  • New Characteristics in Chinese Journalism Education, Gao Gang, Executive Dean of the School Journalism, Renmin University;
  • Knowledge Structure of Chinese Media Professionals in the Era of Globalization, Sun Youzhong, Dean of Journalism Department, Beijing Foreign Studies University;
  • “Major + X” Approach: Report on the New Approach of Journalism Education in a Provincial University, Zheng Yanan, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Heilongjiang University
  • Improving the Quality of Journalism Education through Practice, Sheng Peilin, Professor of Journalism, PLA Nanjing Institute of Politics
  • Global Business Journalism in the Context of the Global Financial Crisis, Gregory Fields, Visiting Scholar of School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University

Attendees at the conference included 49 representatives from 25 university school of journalism, a representative from the Chinese Journalist Association and a representative of Xinhua News Agency.

2008年12月19日至21日，USCET与清华大学合作举办首届全球新闻教育改革大会。

这次会议在两个方面值得注意。首先，该议程涉及广泛的问题，汇集了中国许多顶尖新闻学院的院长。会议重点讨论的问题包括由联合国教科文组织起草并由清华提出的新闻教育示范课程； 技术在新闻教育中的作用及其在实践中的应用以及跨学科研究对新闻专业学生的价值。
