USCET’s efforts toward Advancing American Expertise on China strengthen American understanding of contemporary China and support the next generation of America’s China experts. These programs seek to build expertise and foster meaningful engagement at a time when opportunities for direct study and fieldwork in China have sharply declined. The China Connections series spotlights leading thinkers on China and U.S.-China relations through monthly public events, where they share expertise, analyze current events, and highlight career opportunities in the China field for students, young professionals, and the public. Students Finding Common Ground takes a collaborative approach by bringing American and Chinese students together to develop practical projects in areas such as education, public health, peace and security, and climate, while identifying new areas for bilateral cooperation amid strategic competition.
These initiatives are complemented by the Expert Working Group on Investing in Deeper American Knowledge about China, which brings together leading scholars and practitioners to address the decline in opportunities for American graduate students to study and conduct fieldwork in China, seeking to advance U.S.-China educational engagement and produce concrete policy recommendations for both governments. Together, these programs create multiple pathways for Americans at different career stages to deepen their China expertise and maintain critical understanding of the world's second-largest economy.
