VENUE: Shanghai International Studies University
USCET hosted its second Forum for American Society and Culture in November 2013 at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). This series of talks focused on the relationship between religion and American national values. Distinguished historians Marilyn Lake, Australian Research Council Professorial Fellow in History at the University of Melbourne, Australia; Sonya Michel, Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center and Professor of History at the University of Maryland; and Tu Yichao, Professor at the Center for American Studies at Fudan University explored the relationship between U.S. religion and broader American social movements, including the interaction between religious beliefs, equal rights, and even foreign policy. SISU students asked questions regarding the evolution of American religion and its relationship to cultural norms. Graduate students also had the opportunity to present their research topics and ask for speakers’ feedback.
