USCET November China Trip Updates

From November 13 to November 20, USCET successfully completed a series of events in China that addressed themes in American and Jewish Studies. These events were conducted in cooperation with Peking University and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. USCET brought together American and Chinese experts alike to share their perspectives in dialogues at these Chinese institutions.

 

Programs

12th Annual American Studies Network Conference

"Locality and Transnationality: New Approaches to Understanding US-China Relations" 

Date: November 13-15, 2015 

Venue: Peking University 

 

USCET hosted the 12th Annual American Studies Network (ASN) Conference, partnering with Peking University's prestigious School of International Studies on November 13-15, 2015. The theme of the conference was Locality and Transnationality: New Approaches to Understanding US-China Relations. The conference drew participants from over 46 universities across China and internationally. Many of the academics were young upcoming specialists in American Studies and US-China relations. Presentations covered topics including: The Effects of International Education on Soft PowerDiplomatic Implications of Women's Work in American Consumer Society, and More Change than Continuity: An Early Evaluation of the Remaking of U.S.-China Relations after 2016. The ASN has evolved in the past 12 years, and USCET is very please to serve as a platform to the development of careers for young Chinese scholars. 

Featured speakers included: Rabbi Andrew Baker, Director of International Jewish Affairs at the American Jewish Committee (AJC); Aviva Kempner, founder of the Ciesla Foundation; David Lampton, Chairman of The Asia Foundation and Professor and Director of China Studies at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies; Ambassader Chen Yonglong, Secretary General of the China-US Exchange Foundation; Huang Ping, President of the China National Association of American Studies; and Ambassador Matan Vilnai, Israeli Ambassador to China.

The 2015 Annual F.Y. Chang Lecture 

"Intellectual Property and the Future of Entertainment"

Date: November 19, 2015

Venue: Peking University 

Featuring William Fisher and Zhang Qi

Every year, the F.Y. Chang Lecture joins together Peking University Law School, Tsinghua University Law School, and the Harvard University Law School East Asian Legal Studies Program Lecture to honor the life of Chang Fu-yun, the first Chinese man to graduate from Harvard Law School. The Lecture invites prominent scholars and jurists from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the US to share their expertise in carrying on F.Y. Chang’s legacy of expanding Sino-American understanding through the rule of law.

The 2015 F.Y. Chang Lecture featured William Fisher, Harvard law professor and expert on intellectual property law. Professor Fisher discussed the future of digital entertainment to an overflowing room at Peking University Law School. Zhang Qi, Professor at the Peking University Law School, closed the program by expressing his support of the ASN. 

 

 

The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) 2015 Forum 

"Forum Celebrating Shanghai: Haven for Jews in Holocaust" 

Date: November 17, 2015

Venue: Center for Jewish Studies Shanghai at SASS

Featuring Rabbi Andrew Baker, Aviva Kempner, Dr. Pan Guang and Dr. Wang Jian 

The U.S China Education Trust, American Jewish Committee Asia Pacific Institute (API), and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) convened a forum in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Shanghai Jewish ghetto. Rabbi Baker spoke about coming to terms with the Holocaust; Dr. Pan Guang, Dean of the Center for Jewish Studies Shanghai (CJSS) at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), spoke about the history of the Jews in Shanghai, and Aviva Kempner, Director and Founder of the Ciesla Foundation, spoke about documenting the Holocaust and the second generation's responsibility.

Attendees included CJSS professors and associate deans, Jewish community members, AJC staff and board members, professors from other Chinese universities, Amy Liao, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Refugee Museum, Shanghai People's Publication House staff, and CJSS students. 

 

 

 

Meeting with the Recipients of the Ruth Kao and Greenberg-Starr Scholarships 

Date: November 20th, 2015

Venue: Yunnan University 

USCET Program Director Ye Sheng met with eleven new recipients and five renewed recipients of the Ruth Kao and Greenberg-Starr scholarships at Yunnan University. Together with Yunnan administrators and scholarship recipients, they discussed opportunities the scholarships have provided the students, as well as future directions of the program.

Students shared stories of how the scholarship has allowed them to focus on their studies, make time for volunteer opportunities, and expand their horizons. Participants discussed different means of growing and strengthening the program including expanding alumni partipation and establishing online connections.

第12届美国研究网络年会

“本土性和跨国性:理解中美关系的新路径”

2015年11月13日至15日,USCET与北京大学国际关系学院合作举办第十二届美国研究网络年会(Annual American Studies Network,ASN)年会。本届年会的主题是本土性和跨国性:理解中美关系的新路径。本次年会吸引了来自全国及全球各地超过46所高校的学者参加。其中许多都是新一批美国研究和中美关系方面的年轻专家。

演讲包括了以下几个主题:国际教育对软实力的影响;在美国消费社会中女性工作对外交的影响;变化多于不变:2016年后中美关系改革的早期评价。在过去的12年里,ASN不断进化,USCET很荣幸成为中国年轻学者发展职业的平台。

主讲嘉宾有:美国犹太委员会(American Jewish Committee,AJC)国际事务主任贝克先生(Rabbi Andrew Baker);西斯拉基金会创始人阿维法·肯普娜(Aviva Kempner);亚洲协会会长、约翰·霍普金斯大学国际关系学院中国研究教授大卫·兰普顿(David Micheal Lampton);中美交流基金会秘书长陈永龙大使;中国美国学会会长黄平;前以色列驻华大使马腾(Matan Vilnai)。

2015张福运年度讲座 

“知识产权与娱乐产业的未来”

主讲人:威廉·费舍尔(William Fisher),张骐

张福运讲座每年都会与北京大学法学院、清华大学法学院、哈佛法学院东亚法律研究中心同聚一堂,纪念首个从哈佛法学院毕业的中国人:张福运先生。讲座邀请来自中国大陆、香港、台湾、美国的著名学者和法学家,继承张福运先生的意志,通过分享他们的法律经验加强中美之间的理解。

2015张福运年度讲座的主讲人为哈佛大学法学博士、知识产权法专家威廉·费舍尔。费舍尔教授为北京大学法学院讲堂带去了关于数字娱乐产业的未来的讨论,该场讲座座无虚席。北京大学法学院教授张骐在闭幕词上表达了他对ASN的感谢。

 

 

 

 

上海社会科学院2015年论坛

“纪念犹太难民来沪避难论坛”

地点:上海犹太研究中心

主讲者:任贝克、阿维法·肯普娜、潘光、王建

USCET携手美国犹太人委员会亚太研究所(American Jewish Committee Asia Pacific Institute,API)和上海社会科学院召开论坛纪念上海犹太人区解放70周年。任贝克讲述了他如何在大屠杀中活下来;上海犹太研究中心(Center for Jewish Studies Shanghai,CJSS)主任潘光论述了犹太人在上海的历史;西斯拉基金会创始人阿维法·肯普娜则叙述了关于大屠杀难民记录片的制作历程以及幸存者第二代的责任。

CJSS教授及副主任、犹太人社区成员、AJC成员以及董事会成员、来自其他高校的教授、上海犹太难民纪念馆副主任Amy Liao,上海人民出版社工作人员,以及CJSS学生都出席了本次论坛。

 

 

 

 

Ruth H. Kuo 与Rhoda How 纪念奖学金以及Greenberg-Starr奖学金获得者

USCET项目主管盛晔在云南大学与Greenberg/starr奖学金以及Ruth H. Kuo 与Rhoda How 纪念基金会奖学金的获得者见面,其中11位是新一批获得者,5位是延续上一批获得者。盛晔同云南行政人员与奖学金获得者一起讨论了奖学金为学生带了什么样的机会以及奖学金项目未来的展望。

获奖学生分享了各自的故事,讲述奖学金如何帮助他们学业,让他们能抽出时间做志愿者,并拓展了他们的视野。获奖学生还提出各种扩大加强奖学金项目的方法,包括积极邀请校友参与以及建立线上联系网络。
