April 28, 2016

On Tuesday, April 26, 2016, The US-China Education Trust (USCET), in partnership with Caixin Media and Fudan University, successfully completed the Second Data Journalism Competition and Media Education Consortium (MEC) Conference. Over sixty teachers, students, and media members attended, including representatives from sixteen universities and five media companies.

Winners of the Second Data Journalism Competition presented their work, which employed data journalism to create news stories on the subject of the environment. Participants were particularly encouraged to study the impact of the environment and climate change on Chinese society. Lecturers in data journalism from across China and Hong Kong discussed best practices and challenges that face the growing field. Caixin Media, China's preeminent media organization for data journalism, was represented by Cui Zheng, a journalist specializing in enviornmental issues. Cui discussed the trends in the industry and the need for both accuracy and skills in interpreting data.

USCET's president, Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch, urged conference audience members to "find the story", think critically, and realize the important role that data journalism plays, through providing accurate and engaging information, in fostering better understanding between the United States and China.
