The University of Arkansas used the opportunity provided through the USCET Student Leaders Exchange Program to expand opportunities for student participation in a number of existing partnership programs in 2011. U of Arkansas used USCET grant funds to provide $2,000 scholarships to 14 students studying in China in Summer and Fall 2011. They leveraged the $20,000 Student Leaders Exchange Grant to raise an additional $8,000 from the students' sponsoring college. Participants took part in the University of Arkansas direct enrollment program at Sichuan University in Chengdu, as well as in partner programs at Peking University and the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, Shanghai University and East China Normal University in Shanghai, and the Southwest University for Nationalities in Chengdu. One student participated in a summer internship program in Beijing.
The students used all of their experiences in China as great learning opportunities, and carried their interest in and enthusiasm about China back to their alma mater. USCET is happy to have been able to facilitate such meaningful experiences. We hope that the students will continue to engage their fellow classmates in meaningful on-campus dialogues about China and US-China relations.
"I really enjoyed my opportunity to study abroad this summer in Shanghai. During my 8 week stay, I learned something new every day. Whether it was the learning the history of China, learning how to speak Mandarin, or learning about contemporary culture or Chinese business, I was constantly being exposed to new knowledge. I made sure that I took advantage of every field trip and tried every new type of food while I was there to ensure that I was getting the most out of my experience. I'm truly grateful that I had the opportunity to see and experience China by studying abroad. Without the USCET scholarship this wouldn't have been possible."
"Being granted the opportunity to study abroad in China, I am not just an outsider who doesn't really care. Now as a person who has experienced life there first hand, and I am able to say just how keen my interest is to learn more about the nation and the people. Thank you so much for the wonderful opportunity to study and really learn about a country I hope to spend a large majority of my life engaged with."
"My semester in China was eye opening in so many ways. The opportunity's provided to learn firsthand about culture and business are wonderful assets that can now provide me with insight in my career of choice. The USCET scholarship was one of main reasons I was able to afford going to China. Without the USCET scholarship I would never have been able to experience mainland China firsthand, and benefit from the opportunity's my time there has afforded me. Through my teachers eyes I was able to experience a time in China that I had never really considered or known much about. Before I went to China all I really knew about it was where it was on a map, and that in 10 to 15 years it is predicted to be a top would power. If you ask me about China now I would be able to tell you about its times of prosperity and depression, how the country deals with its own people, the class system, and much more."
"I am so thankful for the USCET scholarship because it provided me the opportunity to see the world through a new perspective. Going to China was my first experience going out of the country on my own and I never in a million years would have thought I would have gained such an amazing cultural learning experience...Learning in the classroom doesn't have nearly the affect that learning in a real life environment does. Thanks to the USCET scholarship, I learned about societal problems and hardships in Asia and really take these realizations to heart. It made me realize how blessed I am to live in the USA but also made me realize how being an International Relations major gives me the power to try and make a change in the world and get involved in organizations to help those in need. My study abroad experience was a once in a lifetime experience and I am so blessed to have been able to receive the USCET scholarship so that my study abroad experience was more possible to reach."
